Why attend a Fellowship in Hernia?

Hernia is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by general surgeons.
There is a sea-change in understanding the art and science of hernia in the last decade or so. Laparoscopic surgery for hernia repair, along with new prostheses and fixating technologies, merit evaluation and acceptance amongst surgeons. Patients increasingly demand minimal access surgery for hernia repair, since it translates into a quicker recovery, less pain and faster assumption of working life. There is an increasing need, therefore, for general surgeons to train themselves and add the skill to their repertoire.

The CEMAST Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery for Hernia will give an opportunity to Fellows to have in depth understanding of the subject with adequate exposure, and help them progress to new dimension of hernia surgery in their practice.

What does the fellowship program include?

The program starts with the three days of Master Hernia course at CEMAST, Mumbai.

After completion of three days of the course, Fellows will attend the operating rooms with the faculty and continue academic activities at CEMAST, Mumbai.

Academic activities include:

  • Hands-on practice in dry lab

  • One-on-one sessions with Course Director, including operative videos & didactic lectures

  • Attending lectures of other relevant courses at CEMAST, as specified by their Course Director

While attending surgery with Faculty surgeon, the Fellow is expected to make detailed observations of steps of surgery and interact with faculty and OR Team.

*The demonstration of surgeries would depend upon the availability of cases in any particular period and would differ from one course to another.

How does one register for the fellowship program?

  • Online submission of the form and online payment of the course fee.

  • The course fee will not cover travel or stay.

How will the Fellows be Evaluated ?

Fellows shall submit a write up on step by step approach of varying hernia procedures seen or discussed during the program. The Fellows will maintain a detailed log book with all the activities carried out during the period of fellowship.

Skills test will be conducted at the time of entry and exit to evaluate progress. Exit examination will be also conducted along with review of log book.

What is the duration of the Fellowship?

Duration of the Fellowship Program is 2 weeks.

A candidate registering as observer shall be allowed to participate in the course and attend the didactics, video discussions and transmissions at CEMAST. Observers shall not be eligible to any hands-on exercises in the labs.
